The Castle Pinckney Society recently raised a copy of the famous Fort McHenry Flag over Castle Pinckney in Charleston Harbor. During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was inspired to write the “Star Spangled Banner” when he saw the flag still flying over Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Md., on the morning of Sept. 14, 1814, after a fierce bombardment by the British. The original flag, measuring 30′ X 45′, featured 15 stars, and 15 red and white stripes.
