May 10, 2024 — South Carolina Commemorates Confederate Memorial Day

First Confederate National Flag, called the “Stars and Bars”

South Carolina and four other states in the South commemorated Confederate Memorial Day on May 10th. While many South Carolinians will participate in events to observe the annual state holiday on Friday, state offices in South Carolina will close on Tuesday instead.

These were the three national flags of the Confederate States of America — the “Stars and Bars,” “The Stainless Banner,” and “The Blood-Stained Banner”

South Carolina selected May 10 to commemorate Confederate Memorial Day every year because this was the date Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson died in 1863 after he was accidentally shot by his own troops, and the day Federal soldiers captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Georgia in 1865.

The Civil War was the deadliest military conflict in American history. More than 365,000 Union soldiers, and more than 290,000 Confederate soldiers were killed. An untold number of civilians — primarily in the South — were casualties as well.

Tommy Salter and others recently hoisted the Confederacy’s “Stars and Bars” over Castle Pinckney for Confederate Memorial Day.
