Holding CHARLESTON by the Bridle: Castle Pinckney and the Civil War (2024)

Finally, a great book on Castle Pinckney has been published! Holding CHARLESTON by the Bridle focuses on the history of the crescent-shaped fort, located on Shute’s Folly about a mile off Charleston’s East Battery, that precedes that of its better-known neighbor, Fort Sumter. The book’s authors, W. Clifford Roberts, Jr. and Matthew A.M. Locke, explain Castle Pinckney’s history from its construction between 1808 and 1811 as an inner-harbor, secondary defense fort to its role during the Civil War (1861-65). They also explain the modern challenges of preserving the historic fort’s weathered brick walls against rising sea levels. Holding CHARLESTON by the Bridle, complete with photos and illustrations, is available for purchase via several vendors online. In fact, on Aug. 7, 2024 the book was rated “five stars” and a top new release on Amazon Prime.
